Our April 24th meeting featured Christine Geise from Strong Start.
Christine Geise described the Strong Start reading program that encourages children to experience the joy of reading.  The importance of children getting a strong start in reading and numerical ability has a long term benefit to society and the individual.  These programs start with preschool and carry on to the early grades.  The "Letters, Sounds, and Words is used in 30 schools in the Thames Valley School Board and features volunteers working with children for ten weeks to learn the specifics of English sounds and words.  The children work on word or sound games to learn the basics.  These programs are not government funded and rely on sponsors and volunteers.  The current closure of schools has caused problems for the programs and Strong Start is considering on line training for volunteers.  The program follows a defined outline and is goal and achievement oriented.
